Attracting Attention, Showing Personality

Attracting Attention, Showing Personality

As a key part of fashion, accessories have always been important and the presence of them can make someone look very different.

Jewelry will forever play a major role in the fashion industry. Today, some people believe that the accessories a person wears can bring out their true character.

Many people place high value in the quality of their jewelry, spending exuberant amounts on gemstones believed to bring luck. Yet, for those non-superstitious people, there are accessories of different styles and budgets that are made from materials other than just gold and gemstones.

It is commonly known that gold jewelry can be a symbol of high social status. Even though that assumption exists today, take a closer looks and you will see that other materials are becoming more popular for designers to use.

Some accessory designers offer alternative materials in an aim to give fashionista women the styles they want at the price they can afford.

“Accessories are important in building someone’s personality. Their characteristics can be seen in their own style and in the accessories they use,” said accessories designer, Alston Stephanus to SINDO recently.

Alston is considered a newcomer in the fashion world, but his work stole everyone’s attentions when he supported a fashion show for designer Taruna K. Kusmayadi. This will have been the second time that this Singaporean Management student will have supported Taruna’s designs.

First, when he worked with Taruna at the Fashion Tandance Asosiasi Perancang Pengusaha Mode Indonesia (Association of Indonesia’s Fashion Designers) last year, and the second time at the Jakarta Fashion, Food & Festival event last May.

“For the last event, my designs were totally dominated by crystals,” Alston said. He admits that the accessories he presents on the catwalk cannot usually be worn in daily activities, but the glamour of his work leaves quite the impression.

“Usually, my accessories are suitable for those people who dare to be different,” he said. Still producing a variety of unique pieces, Alston admits that he is now concentrated on making accessories from crystals and precious metals. Yet, it is still possible for him to use other materials like glass from a broken windshield, always keeping in mind the most important thing, which is color.

In comparison, Reny Feby, a designer that works with gems, said that she, too, believes that mixing colors in jewelry is the key to success; which in her theory is the reason why so many people like precious gemstones.

She also believes that the array of colors reflected in gems enriches a designer’s collection. Mixing gem colors is a trend right now because it allows the wearer to mix and match with any dress. “All gemstones have their own personalities and color brings that to life,” Reny ended.
